For a long time, prosthetics meant rudimentary attachments used as replacements for missing extremities. The recent technologies used in the field have, however, significantly advanced the quality and functionality you get with modern prosthetics. At Eastside Orthotics Prosthetics we produce sophisticated, state-of-the-art artificial prosthesis in Portland.

What is a prosthesis?

It is an artificial limb designed to replace a limb loss due to an accident, illness, injury or through a congenital disability. Prostheses also go by prosthetic limbs or artificial limbs and come in various types. A prosthetic limb which is made purely for cosmetic reasons, i.e. to restore physical beauty is called a cosmesis. This type of prosthesis usually has little to no function and is only used to enhance physical appearance.

There are other types of prosthetics which are highly functional and allow you to do virtually anything. However, since these types of prostheses rely mostly on improving functionality, they have little to no cosmetic consideration. We offer two kinds of prosthetics, giving you a chance to choose whichever is best for you.

Types of prosthesis

Regardless of the type of limb you are missing, we have the prosthesis to replace it. We have four types of artificial prosthesis in Portland, which can replace either in part or whole of the limb loss. These are:

  • Transtibial prosthesis – this artificial prosthetic caters for below the knee amputees. It replaces a missing lower leg by attaching to an entire upper leg.
  • Transfemoral prosthesis – this prosthesis is for above the knee amputees. It replaces a missing lower and upper leg and includes an artificial knee.
  • Transradial prosthesis – this artificial limb replaces a missing forearm for below the elbow amputees.
  • Transhumeral – this replaces both a missing upper and lower arm and includes an artificial elbow.

Why should I get a prosthetic limb?

You should get a prosthetic limb because it will significantly improve your quality of life after losing a limb. Regardless of the extent of the amputation, artificial limbs will make you whole again and allow you to get back to your normal daily activities before the loss. Prosthetics will enable you to regain full independence and freedom of movement, without relying on other people. If you have a lower limb amputation, an artificial limb will free you from depending on devices like wheelchairs and crutches.

Upper extremity amputees also benefit from artificial limbs. We have various options available for both above and below the elbow amputations which you can choose from depending on the functionality you desire. Do you have a partial amputation where you have lost part of your hand or foot? We have a variety of prosthetics which can restore significant function to your hands.
